Paired Associates — free online memory game
About this game
Study pairs of words — candle–penguin, anchor–violin — until the clock runs out. Then one word of each pair returns alone, and you must type its partner. The paired-associates task has been psychology's main window into associative memory since the 1950s.
How to play Paired Associates
- 1Study the word pairs until time runs out, or leave early.
- 2The first words return one at a time — type each partner.
- 3Score = partners matched exactly (spelling counts, case doesn't).
What Paired Associates trains
Association is the glue of memory: almost nothing is stored alone, only connected to something else. Paired associates trains binding directly — and rewards the known best practice of interactive imagery: a candle surfing a penguin outlasts 'candle, penguin' read ten times. Strong binding is why you never forget a face but often lose a name: one had associations, the other had none.
Category: Memory sports · Scoring: Pairs in pairs · Modes: 8 pairs, 16 pairs, 24 pairs
Tip: Picture the two interacting — a candle surfing a penguin beats reading “candle, penguin”.
What is the paired-associates learning task?
A list of word pairs is studied; later one word (the cue) is shown and the partner must be recalled. It measures how well you bind two items, which is the foundation of learning vocabulary, names and facts.
How many pairs can people remember?
With interactive images, 10–14 of 16 pairs on a first attempt is realistic. Without a strategy, expect half that. The jump between those two numbers is the whole lesson of this game.
Is Paired Associates free?
Yes — Paired Associates is completely free, with no account, no signup and no downloads. Scores are saved privately in your browser, and you can install MemoryGames as an app from your browser menu if you want it on your home screen.
